3-2-1: Baked soil + sacrifice 🔥

Happy Friday!

Here are 3 plant health tips, 2 thoughts of the week, and 1 question for you.

3 Plant Health Tips:

  • Soil amendments. A soil amendment is simply something that you add directly to your soil mix to provide long term nutrition for microbes in the soil that ultimately get fed to your plant.

Bios for example is an amazing soil amendment because it adds long term nutrients as well as beneficial microbes that break the nutrients down! Soil amendments I’ve been using forever are kelp meal, alfalfa meal, rock dust (things like gypsum, rock phosphate, etc.), compost (leaf, horse, cow, etc.) and anything else I could get my green little fingers on.

Variety is the spice of life and that goes for soil amendments too. Kelp meal for example has a ton of trace minerals that plants need to stay healthy (great fungal food too), and alfalfa meal contains triacontanol which is a growth hormone for plants. ~Bios contains all of the above 👌

  • Foliar feeding. I’ve had a few people ask if plants can absorb water/nutrients through their leaves or if it's a myth.

Plants can 100% absorb water and nutrients through their leaves and is actually the most efficient way to get nutrients into your plants quickly. When I started growing cannabis and had nutrients deficiencies in my plants, the quickest way to fix them was through foliar feeding. It’s like a mainline for your plants and fixes deficiencies super quick.

BEFORE YOU FOLIAR FEED: Leaves are sensitive just like us, so make sure you dilute whatever nutrient you are using significantly more than if using on your roots to prevent burning. Feel free to spray a couple times a week with this diluted mixture and keep an eye on your plants. Usually with correcting any nutrient issue, it takes at least a week or two to see a change. Be patient my friends ✌️

  • Soil pasteurization/sterilization (video linked at end of this point). Last week I asked if you threw your soil in the garbage when repotting or if you reused it. I was pretty stoked on the responses I got because it seems like it either gets reused or goes in the garden/compost.

Even if you have pests/disease, the compost or garden will most likely kill them and give you some beautiful healthy soil again. BUT, if you have this issue and don’t have a garden or compost and want to reuse your soil, here is how you can do it and save some cashsheesh 💰

You can bake your soil in oven and basically steam pasteurize or sterilize your soil depending on temperature. I like to pasteurize because it kills all the bad guys and keeps some of the good guys. With either method, you'll want to reintroduce some beneficial microbes into the mix after.

There are definitely more waste efficient ways to do it than in this video so put your creative pants on!

2 Thoughts of the week:

  • Forgiveness

I’ve made so many mistakes in my short 30 years here on earth but that is truly just part of life and there will be many more.

I see mistakes as opportunities for growth but always struggled with forgiving myself for making mistakes simply because I didn’t want to make them again. For some mistakes, I would punish myself for years in the hopes that I wouldn’t repeat it but all I was doing was living in the past and bringing that pain into my present.

Yesterday I wrote all the things down on paper that I haven’t fully forgiven myself for and went like this: “I forgive my self for…(something that lives deep within)”. Then I walked into my backyard and sacrificed that page of demons to the eternal flame of my BIC lighter. 🔥

It felt freeing. Obviously this isn’t going to fix everything and I still have to make the conscious effort to remind myself that I’ve forgiven myself, but I will tell you, it really helped the process.
  • Emotions

Lately I’ve been reading “Meditations” by Marcus Aurelius. It’s a journal from his life during ~100AD and his thoughts about life. For two years this book literally baked in the sun on the dash of my car because I couldn't get past the first 10 pages (yes, it looks 2000 years old now).

Recently there was something pushing me to pick it up and try again and I flew past those first 10 pages and got completely absorbed so I wanted to share one of his entries that stuck with me:

“Yes, you can—if you do everything as if it were the last thing you were doing in your life, and stop being aimless, stop letting your emotions override what your mind tells you, stop being hypocritical, self-centred, irritable. You see how few things you have to do to live a satisfying life?”

1 Question:

  • Have you heard of living soil or know what it is? Let me know what you think it is ↩️

As always, I encourage you to respond to these emails. I honestly love hearing from you and as much as this is an outlet for me, I hope it brings you at least a sliver of value.

    Have a beautiful weekend,
