How To Get Rid Of Thrips On Houseplants (And Actually Keep Them Gone)

If you’ve ever sprayed your plants, watched every thrip curl up and die, felt like a hero for about nine days—and then found them back—this post is for you.

I’m writing this one from experience. I’ve stared down thrips on my own snake plant cuttings more than once. Sprayed. Celebrated. Watched them return.

It’s not because the spray failed. It’s because of where thrips put their eggs, and almost nobody explains that part.

So let’s fix that.


TL;DR – How To Get Rid Of Thrips On Houseplants

  • Thrips lay their eggs inside leaf tissue. Sprays can’t reach them, which is why infestations “come back” a week or two later.
  • You’re not fighting one generation, you’re fighting a cycle. Plan for 4–6 weeks, not one afternoon.
  • Treat weekly for at least a month so you kill each wave of nymphs before it can breed.
  • Add a residual barrier. Diatomaceous earth stays on the leaf and keeps working between treatments—this is the step most people skip.
  • Isolate, inspect, and treat the soil too. Some thrips species pupate in the top layer of your potting mix.
  • Stressed plants get hit hardest. Soft, over-fertilized nitrogen growth is thrip candy. Fixing your feeding is part of pest control.

What Thrips Actually Are (And Why They’re So Annoying)

Thrips are tiny, slender insects—usually 1–2 mm long. They look like little slivers of rice or eyelashes that move when you breathe on them.

They don’t chew leaves like a caterpillar. They rasp the leaf surface open and drink what comes out. That’s why thrip damage looks so distinctive:

  • Silvery or bronze streaks and patches on leaves
  • Tiny black dots (their frass—polite word for poop)
  • Distorted, curled, or stunted new growth
  • Leaves that look faded or “scratched” rather than eaten

The distorted new growth is the real cost. Thrips love the newest, softest tissue—so they damage leaves before those leaves have unfurled. You end up watching a beautiful new Monstera leaf open up already scarred.

Why they keep coming back

Here’s the part that matters most.

Female thrips cut a slit into the leaf or stem tissue with a saw-like ovipositor and lay their eggs inside the plant. Not on the surface. Inside it.

Your spray hits the leaf. The eggs are protected by a layer of plant tissue. So you kill 100% of the adults, feel great about it, and 3–10 days later a fresh batch of nymphs hatches out of leaves you already treated.

Then those nymphs mature in a couple weeks and start laying their own eggs. The cycle restarts, and it looks like your treatment “stopped working.”

It didn’t. You just stopped too early.

The full thrip life cycle, roughly

Under typical indoor temperatures (20–25°C / 68–77°F), the cycle runs somewhere around 2 to 3 weeks from egg to breeding adult. Warmer rooms speed it up. Cooler rooms stretch it out.

Stages look like this:

  1. Egg – inside leaf tissue, untouchable by sprays
  2. Nymph (2 stages) – feeding on your leaves, very vulnerable to treatment
  3. Prepupa / pupa – often drops into the top layer of soil or leaf litter
  4. Adult – feeds, flies short distances, lays more eggs

Notice that two of those five stages are hiding from you—one inside the leaf, one in the soil. That’s the whole problem in a nutshell.


The 4-Week Thrip Protocol I Actually Use

This isn’t a hack. It’s a schedule. That’s the honest answer.

Week 0: Isolate and assess

Move every affected plant away from the rest of your collection. Thrips fly—badly, but they fly—and they’ll happily hop to the plant on the next shelf.

Then inspect properly. Take a plant to a bright window and look at:

  • The undersides of leaves (this is where they hang out)
  • Where the leaf meets the petiole
  • Deep in the crown or growth point
  • Any flowers—thrips absolutely love flowers

While you’re there, cut off anything that’s badly chewed up. A leaf that’s 70% silver isn’t photosynthesizing much for you anyway, and it may be full of eggs. Removing the worst leaves removes a chunk of the next generation. Bag them and get them out of the house—don’t compost them indoors.

Weeks 1–4: Spray weekly, no exceptions

Weekly is the whole game. You’re not trying to kill everything at once—you’re trying to catch every wave of nymphs before it becomes a breeding adult.

Miss a week and you hand them a full generation back.

When you spray:

  • Coat the undersides of every leaf, not just the tops
  • Get into the crown, the leaf joints, and the stems
  • Spray until it’s dripping—contact sprays only work where they land
  • Do it in the evening or out of direct sun so leaves don’t scorch while wet
  • Spray the top of the soil too, to catch pupating stages

A spray top makes this dramatically less painful when you’re doing it four weeks running.

The step most people skip: a residual barrier

Here’s the thing about any contact spray. The moment it dries, its job is done. Nothing is protecting the plant until you spray again next week.

That gap is where thrips win.

Diatomaceous earth (DE) fills that gap. It’s a fine powder made of fossilized diatoms—microscopically, it’s all sharp edges. When a soft-bodied insect crawls over it, it damages their waxy outer layer and they dry out.

The reason it’s so useful against thrips specifically: it stays on the leaf. So when eggs hatch three days after you sprayed, the nymphs have to walk across it.

How I apply it:

  • Mix DE with water and a little Yucca Extract and spray it on. The yucca is a natural surfactant, so the DE spreads and clings evenly instead of beading off.
  • Let it dry into a light dusty film on the leaves.
  • Leave it for 1–2 weeks between applications.
  • Dust the top of the soil as well.

Fair warning: your plants will look chalky for a couple weeks. It’s not the aesthetic anyone wants on their shelf. It also works, so I make peace with it. (We wrote a whole separate guide on using diatomaceous earth if you want to go deeper.)

One practical note: DE only works dry. If you mist your plants constantly or the room is very humid, it loses its edge—literally. Reapply after it gets wet.

Week 5: Wash down and watch

Once you’ve gone four clean weeks with no new adults and no fresh damage on new growth, wash your plants off with plain water and a soft cloth. Get the DE off, get the residue off, let them breathe.

Then keep watching new growth for another two weeks. New leaves are your early warning system—damage shows up there first.


Don’t Forget The Soil

A lot of thrip species drop into the top few centimetres of potting mix to pupate. If you’re only treating leaves, you’re leaving a nursery running underneath the plant.

Options, from gentle to nuclear:

  • Dust the soil surface with DE. Easiest, and it doesn’t disturb your root zone or your microbes much.
  • Top-dress with a fresh layer of mix. Burying the surface makes it harder for emerging adults to get out.
  • Replace the top 2–3 cm of soil entirely if the infestation is heavy.
  • Fully re-soil the plant if it’s gotten out of hand—bare-root it, rinse the roots, use fresh mix.

A word on bagged soil

This one catches people off guard. Pest problems very often come in on a bag of potting mix. I’ve had multiple people reach out over the last couple years saying they got thrips from a freshly opened bag of a major brand.

If you want to be safe with new or suspect soil, boiling water works beautifully:

  1. Put the soil in a bin or bucket.
  2. Boil a kettle and pour it over.
  3. Let it sit at least 15 minutes. Boiling water hits 100°C (212°F), and most pests and pathogens die well below 80°C (175°F).
  4. Let it cool, then squeeze out the excess water.

Cheap, zero waste, no oven bags required.

The catch: it kills the good stuff too. Your beneficial bacteria and fungi are just as dead as the thrips. So you need to put life back in—a scoop of our dry fertilizer or a dose of Plant Probiotic will restart the microbial engine that actually delivers nutrients to your roots.


Why Some Plants Get Hammered And Others Don’t

You’ve probably noticed this. Same room, same shelf, one plant is destroyed and its neighbour is untouched.

Part of that is species preference—thrips have favourites. But a big part of it is plant stress.

Soft, fast, watery growth is easier to pierce and richer in free amino acids. That’s exactly what you get when a plant is pushed hard with high-nitrogen synthetic fertilizer. You grow a bigger, greener, floppier plant—and you hand pests a better meal.

The other pieces of resilience:

  • Adequate potassium, which supports cell wall strength and stress tolerance
  • Adequate calcium and magnesium—calcium is a literal structural component of cell walls, and tougher cell walls are harder for a thrip to pierce
  • A living soil, because a healthy root system supports healthy tissue
  • Clean leaves, because dust and grime give pests cover
  • Enough humidity—thrips do notably well in hot, dry air

None of this replaces treatment when you’ve got an active infestation. It just means you get fewer infestations, and the ones you get do less damage.


Mistakes That Keep Thrips Alive

1. Treating once and calling it done

The single biggest one. You cannot beat an insect that lays eggs inside leaves with a single application. You need to outlast the cycle.

2. Spraying only the tops of leaves

Thrips live underneath. If you’re only spraying what you can see from above, you’re basically watering your plants with extra steps.

3. Not isolating the plant

You can run a flawless four-week protocol and then get reinfested from the plant sitting next to it that you never treated.

4. Ignoring the soil

Covered above. Half the life cycle may be down there.

5. Rotating through five different products in three weeks

Panic-buying every product on the shelf and switching weekly feels productive. It isn’t. Pick an approach, apply it consistently on schedule, and give it the full four weeks. Consistency beats novelty here every time.

6. Bringing plants in from outside without checking

Late summer and fall is when this bites people. A plant that spent the summer on the patio comes inside carrying passengers. Inspect and treat before it joins the indoor collection, not after.


Thrips FAQ

How long does it take to get rid of thrips?

Realistically, 4 to 6 weeks of consistent weekly treatment. Anything promising a one-day fix is not accounting for eggs inside leaf tissue. A light, early-caught infestation may clear in four weeks; a heavy one on a large plant can take longer.

Can thrips kill a houseplant?

They can, though it usually takes a heavy, sustained infestation. More often they severely weaken a plant—reduced photosynthesis, distorted growth, and stress that opens the door to disease.

Do thrips live in soil?

Many species pupate in the top layer of soil, yes. That’s why treating leaves alone often fails.

Will thrips spread to my other plants?

Yes. Adults fly short distances and will move along a shelf. Isolate affected plants immediately and check their neighbours carefully.

Are thrips harmful to people or pets?

Not meaningfully. They may occasionally bite a human and it feels like a tiny pinprick, but they don’t live on people or animals and they don’t transmit disease to us. They’re a plant problem, not a health problem.

What’s the difference between thrips and spider mites?

Both cause stippled, faded leaves. Spider mites are round, nearly invisible, and produce fine webbing between leaves and stems. Thrips are elongated and visibly mobile, leave black frass dots, and cause silvery streaking with distorted new growth. If you see webbing, it’s mites.

Do sticky traps get rid of thrips?

Blue or yellow sticky traps catch flying adults, which makes them a genuinely useful monitoring tool—they tell you whether the population is dropping week over week. They won’t clear an infestation on their own.


Bringing It Back To Your Shelf

Thrips aren’t hard to kill. They’re hard to outlast.

Everything about getting rid of them comes down to one shift in thinking: stop treating this as an event and start treating it as a four-week schedule. Weekly spray, a residual barrier between sprays, the soil handled, the plant isolated, and a bit of patience.

Do that, and they go away and stay away.

And once they’re gone, the best defence is a plant that isn’t stressed in the first place—decent soil, gentle natural nutrition, clean leaves, and a root system that’s actually supported by microbes rather than propped up by salt.

I do love insects. They run soil health, they run pollination, they run more of this planet than we like to admit.

But thrips? Thrips can go.
