By the time you spot the fine webbing between your leaves, they’ve usually been there for weeks—quietly draining your plant a cell at a time, breeding at a genuinely alarming rate, and spreading to the plants nearby.
They’re not insects, which matters more than it sounds. It changes how they breed, how fast they build resistance, and what actually works against them.
Here’s how to spot them early, and how to clear them without losing half your collection.

Why Spider Mites Are Different
Most houseplant pests are insects. Spider mites are arachnids—more closely related to spiders and ticks. That’s not trivia; it’s the key to beating them.
It means they reproduce with terrifying speed. A single female can lay dozens of eggs, and in a warm room a new generation matures in under a week. One or two mites become a webbed-over infestation shockingly fast.
It also means they develop resistance to chemical miticides remarkably quickly—precisely because they cycle through generations so fast. Spray the same chemical a few times and you’re essentially breeding a resistant population. This is the single strongest argument for using treatments that work physically rather than chemically, which I’ll come back to.
What they do to your plant
Spider mites pierce individual leaf cells and drink the contents. Each feeding puncture kills one cell, and thousands of punctures add up to:
- Fine pale speckling or stippling across the leaf (the earliest sign)
- Leaves that look dull, faded, dusty, or bronzed
- Yellowing and leaf drop as damage mounts
- Fine silk webbing between leaves, stems and leaf joints in heavy infestations
- In severe cases, a plant that’s slowly stripped bare
How To Spot Them Early
Early detection is everything with spider mites, because the population curve is so steep. Catch them at speckling and it’s a minor job. Catch them at webbing and it’s a campaign.
The stippling test
Look at your leaves against the light. Early spider mite damage shows as tiny pale dots—like someone went over the leaf with a fine pin. It often starts near the veins and along the midrib.
If a plant looks subtly “off”—a bit dull, a bit faded, not as vibrant as it was—check the undersides of the leaves. Mites live and feed on the underside.
The paper test
Hold a sheet of white paper under a leaf and tap the leaf sharply. If tiny specks fall onto the paper and—this is the tell—start slowly crawling around, those are spider mites. Dust doesn’t walk.
The webbing check
By the time you see fine webbing spanning leaf joints and stem tips, the infestation is well established. Don’t wait for this stage. But if you’re here, it’s still very winnable—it just takes the full protocol.
The Spider Mite Protocol
Consistency and repetition beat any single miracle treatment. Here’s the sequence.
Step 1: Isolate, immediately
Spider mites spread faster than almost anything. They travel across touching leaves, on air currents, even on you. The moment you confirm mites, move that plant well away from every other plant and check its former neighbours closely.
Step 2: Rinse them down
Before you treat, physically knock the population back. Take the plant to a shower or sink and rinse it thoroughly—especially leaf undersides—with room-temperature water. This alone removes a huge share of mites, eggs and webbing, and gives whatever you spray next far less to deal with.
Step 3: Treat every 5–7 days
This tight schedule is non-negotiable with mites, because eggs hatch continuously and their generation time is so short. You’re aiming to hit each new wave before it can breed.
I use Herbal Plant Soap for this. It’s a plant-based soap that works by physical action—coating and disrupting soft-bodied mites—rather than by a chemical they can adapt to. That physical mechanism is why mites can’t build resistance to it the way they do to conventional miticides, and it doesn’t reek the way neem oil does.
When you treat:
- Cover the undersides of every leaf—that’s where they live
- Get into leaf joints, stem tips and the crown
- Spray until dripping; missed spots become re-infestation sites
- Treat out of direct sun so wet leaves don’t scorch
- Keep it up for at least 3–4 weeks, even after they seem gone
A spray top makes several weeks of this far less tedious.
Step 4: Add a residual barrier
Between sprays, diatomaceous earth keeps working. Mixed with water and a little Yucca Extract so it spreads and clings, it dries into a fine film that damages mites as they move across it. The yucca acts as a natural wetting agent so the DE coats leaves evenly instead of beading off.
For a lethal combination on a stubborn infestation, plant soap and diatomaceous earth together—soap kills on contact, DE keeps killing as it dries—is about as effective as natural control gets.
Step 5: Change the conditions

Why You Got Them: Hot, Dry, Dusty Air
Spider mites thrive in exactly the conditions most homes have in winter: warm, dry air with poor airflow. Heating running, humidity on the floor, dusty leaves—that’s a spider mite’s ideal world.
So prevention and long-term control come down to making your space less hospitable:
- Raise humidity. Mites hate it. A more humid environment slows their breeding dramatically. Grouping plants, a pebble tray, or a humidifier all help.
- Clean your leaves. Dust gives mites cover and dulls the plant. Wipe leaves every few months with a damp cloth, or spray regularly with yucca and water. Clean leaves also photosynthesize better.
- Improve airflow. Stagnant air favours mites. A little air movement discourages them.
- Don’t over-fertilize with high-nitrogen synthetics. Soft, lush growth from heavy feeding is easier for mites to pierce—the same principle that applies to most sap-feeding pests. We got into that in our NPK guide.
Outdoors, it’s the same story
In the garden, spider mites explode in hot, dry spells and on dusty plants along paths and driveways. Same triggers, same fixes: a strong hose-down, better airflow, and not letting plants get drought-stressed, which makes them more vulnerable.
Mistakes That Keep Spider Mites Alive
1. Treating once
With a pest that hatches a new generation weekly, a single treatment is almost meaningless. Repetition on a tight schedule is the entire game.
2. Spraying only the tops of leaves
Mites live underneath. Top-only spraying misses the population entirely.
3. Relying on one chemical miticide
Their fast generations mean resistance develops quickly. This is exactly why a physical-action treatment like plant soap is the smarter long-term choice.
4. Not isolating
Treat one plant perfectly while it sits touching three others, and you’ve accomplished nothing. They’ve already moved.
5. Stopping too soon
They seem gone, you relax, and the eggs you didn’t kill hatch. Push through the full 3–4 weeks past the last sign.
6. Ignoring the dry air
If you clear them but leave the room hot, dry and dusty, you’ve rebuilt the welcome mat.
