No. It's optional to buy distilled or reverse osmosis water. If you want to make your own soil you'll need peat moss or coco coir, perlite, coarse sand, bark, and compost. These ingredients are all easy to find and cheap on purpose. It's 10x cheaper to make your own soil and once you've got the basics down (explained in Soil Building Module & Plant Care Bible) you can experiment as much as you'd like. If you live in an apartment or need lighting then I definitely recommend grabbing some grow lights which will be explained in the Lighting module.

HOW DARE YOU! Nah I'm kidding. Tap water is fine and in our Watering Module I'll teach you exactly how to adjust the pH of tap water and process it if needed to make it beneficial for your plants. Tap water has tons of minerals in it which is essential for plant growth so it definitely gets a bad wrap, but I have used it many times with success. You just have to know how.
