Bottom Watering Houseplants: Why I Soak Every Pot (And How To Do It Right)
Most houseplant problems I get asked about aren’t really pest problems, or light problems, or fertilizer problems.
They’re watering problems wearing a costume.
And the single biggest one isn’t overwatering. It’s that people are giving their plants a little splash of water every few days and genuinely believing the plant has been watered.
It hasn’t. Let me explain what’s actually happening in that pot—and why I bottom water almost everything I own.

- Soil needs to be fully saturated every single time you water. A splash on top doesn’t reach the root zone.
- Under-watering looks almost identical to overwatering—drooping, crispy edges, stalled growth. People misdiagnose this constantly.
- Bottom watering means setting the pot in a container of water and letting the soil pull moisture up until the surface is damp.
- It prevents hydrophobic soil, eliminates dry pockets, and stops fertilizer running straight out the drainage holes.
- Water thoroughly, then wait. You’ll water less often and grow better plants.
- Skip a rigid schedule. Use a “soft watering day” where you check, then decide.
- Not for everything. Cacti and succulents in the wrong mix, and trailing plants in hangers, are the exceptions.
The Problem With How Most People Water
Picture the standard routine. You walk around with a small watering can on a Sunday, give each plant a modest pour, see water darken the surface, and move on.
Here’s what that actually does.
1. The water never reaches the roots
A small pour wets the top two or three centimetres and stops. Meanwhile the roots—the actual water-absorbing part of your plant—are in the middle and bottom third of the pot, still bone dry.
The plant reads that as drought, because it is one. You get slow growth, dropped leaves, and crispy tips. Then you look at the damp soil surface, conclude you’ve been watering plenty, and start suspecting root rot.
This is the trap. Chronic under-watering and overwatering produce nearly identical symptoms. Both leave a plant unable to move water into its leaves—one because there’s no water down there, the other because the roots have rotted and can’t take it up.
Same droop. Completely opposite fix. Which is how a lot of people water a dying plant to death, or let a drowning one dry out for three weeks.
2. Your soil turns hydrophobic
This one surprises people.
Peat moss and coco coir are excellent at holding water—until they dry out completely. Once they do, the particles tighten and the surface becomes genuinely water-repellent.
You pour water on. It sits in a bead for a second, then races down the gap between the soil and the pot wall and straight out the bottom. The pot feels heavier for a minute, water came out the drainage hole, everything looks correct.
The root ball is still dry.
You can test this yourself. Water a plant you suspect, wait ten minutes, then push a finger or a chopstick down the middle of the pot. If it’s dry two inches in, you’ve been watering the outside of a dry brick.
3. You’re pouring money down the drain
Literally, if you add anything to your water.
When water channels down the sides and runs straight out, any fertilizer or supplement in it goes with it. It has maybe four seconds of contact with soil that’s not absorbing anything. You paid for nutrients that spent their entire career inside your drip tray.
What Bottom Watering Actually Is
Bottom watering—or butt chugging, if we’re being honest about what the plant community actually calls it—means putting the pot into water instead of putting water into the pot.
You set the pot in a sink, bin, or bowl with a few inches of water in it. Capillary action pulls moisture up through the drainage holes, through the whole root ball, evenly, from the bottom up.
When the top of the soil is visibly damp, you know the water has travelled the entire height of the pot. There is no guesswork. The soil itself tells you it’s saturated.
That’s the part I love about it. Top watering asks you to estimate. Bottom watering gives you a signal.
Why it fixes the hydrophobic problem
Dry, tight soil resists water arriving fast from above. It does not resist water arriving slowly from below, because the water has time to work into the particles instead of skating over them.
Soak a hydrophobic pot from the bottom for 20–30 minutes and it rehydrates properly—something you often can’t achieve from the top at all.
How To Bottom Water, Step By Step
- Find a container. A sink, a storage bin, a mixing bowl, a bathtub for the big ones. Fill it with a few inches of water—roughly a third of the pot’s height.
- Add your inputs to the water, not to the plant. This is where I put liquid fertilizer and Yucca Extract. More on why in a second.
- Sit the pots in. Nursery pots with open drainage holes work best. Decorative cachepots with no holes obviously don’t.
- Wait 15–40 minutes. Small pots drink fast, large ones take longer.
- Check the surface. Once the top layer is damp to the touch, the job is done. That’s the whole tell.
- Drain properly. Lift the pots out and let them drain fully before they go back on saucers. Sitting in standing water afterwards is how you actually cause root rot.
It’s a bit of a pain hauling plants to one spot and back. I won’t pretend otherwise. But you’re doing it far less often than a top-watering routine, and the difference in growth is not subtle.
Why I add yucca extract to the water
Yucca is a natural surfactant—a wetting agent. Yucca plants contain saponins, natural soap-like compounds, and they do something genuinely useful in a pot: they lower the surface tension of water.
Lower surface tension means water spreads into soil particles instead of beading and running past them. Practically, that means:
- Soil saturates faster and more evenly
- Dry pockets in the middle of the root ball get eliminated
- Hydrophobic mixes rehydrate properly
- Nutrients dissolved in the water actually travel where the roots are
The bonus is that the natural sugars in yucca feed soil microbes, which are the organisms doing the real work of turning nutrients into something roots can absorb.
Why liquid fertilizer belongs in the soak
Because the root zone is fully saturated during a soak, the nutrients go everywhere the roots are, rather than in a concentrated slug down one channel.
That’s gentler and more efficient. Our liquid plant food is made from fermented food waste, so it’s mild enough to use this way regularly during active growth without shocking anything.

Ditch The Schedule, Keep The Routine
“Water every Sunday” is a comforting rule that will eventually kill something.
Because it’s winter and your plants are drinking half as much. Or you moved a plant near a heating vent and it’s drying out twice as fast. Or it’s July and everything is growing like mad. A fixed schedule can’t see any of that.
What I use instead is a soft watering day.
Mine is Wednesday. Every Wednesday I go around and:
- Push a finger into the soil, an inch or two down
- Pick the pot up and feel how heavy it is
- Look at the plant—any subtle droop, any curl
If it needs water, it gets a full soak. Full saturation.
If it can wait another week, it waits another week.
The routine keeps you consistent. The check keeps you honest. You get the discipline of a schedule without the blindness of one.
The weight trick is underrated
Once you’ve lifted the same pot wet and dry a few times, your hands calibrate. A fully saturated pot is startlingly heavier than a dry one, and you'll start reading it instantly.
It’s more reliable than a moisture meter and it costs nothing.
When NOT To Bottom Water
I want to be straight about the limits here, because “bottom water everything” is bad advice.
Cacti and succulents in the wrong soil
If your cactus is sitting in straight potting mix, do not soak it. You will kill it.
The issue isn’t bottom watering—it’s the mix. A cactus in a properly gritty, fast-draining mix can be soaked and will drain out in minutes. A cactus in dense peat-based potting soil will sit in wet muck for a week.
Fix the soil first, then the watering method takes care of itself. Which is the theme of this entire post, really.
Trailing plants in hangers
Getting a hanging Pothos down, into a sink, and back up on a hook is a genuine nightmare. I top water these and accept it. Just be thorough about it—go slow, go around the whole surface, and keep going until it runs out the bottom steadily rather than in a single rush.
Plants with a salt buildup problem
Bottom watering never flushes anything out of the pot, so mineral salts from hard tap water or synthetic fertilizer gradually accumulate. If you’ve got a white crust on the soil surface or the pot rim, top water heavily a couple times a year to flush it through.
This is much less of an issue if you’re feeding naturally rather than with salt-based synthetics—there’s far less to accumulate. It’s also less of an issue if you’re using rainwater or filtered water, which we got into in our post on the best type of water for plants.
Very freshly potted plants
Loose, unsettled mix can float and shift when soaked from below. Give a fresh repot a gentle top water first and let it settle for a week or two.
“But Won’t I Overwater?”
This is the objection I hear most, so let’s deal with it honestly.
With the right soil, overwatering is genuinely hard to do.
Root rot isn’t caused by too much water. It’s caused by too little oxygen—water that sits, fills every air pocket, and suffocates roots so opportunistic pathogens move in.
A mix with proper aeration and drainage holds moisture in the particles while air moves through the gaps between them. Water it, the excess leaves, air returns within minutes. You could water a plant in a well-built mix daily and it would be fine.
Think about outdoor plants. They effectively have an infinitely large pot and get rained on for days at a stretch, and they thrive—because soil conditions are right.
So if you’re nervous about soaking your plants, the honest answer is that your unease is probably about your soil, not your watering. Bottom Watering FAQ
How long should you bottom water houseplants?
Usually 15 to 40 minutes. Small pots can finish in 10; large ones may take an hour. Don’t watch the clock—watch the soil surface. When the top is damp, it’s done.
How often should I bottom water?
Only when the plant needs it. Check weekly, water on demand. For most houseplants in active growth that lands somewhere around every 7–14 days, and considerably less in winter. Because you’re saturating fully, you’ll water less often than you did before.
Can you leave plants sitting in water?
No. Take them out once the surface is damp and let them drain fully. Roots left in standing water lose access to oxygen, and that’s where root rot actually begins.
Is bottom watering better than top watering?
For most potted houseplants, yes—it saturates more evenly, prevents dry pockets, and wastes less fertilizer. Top watering has one advantage: it flushes accumulated salts out of the pot. The ideal is mostly bottom watering with an occasional heavy top-water flush.
Does bottom watering cause fungus gnats?
It tends to help, actually. Fungus gnats lay eggs in consistently damp surface soil. Bottom watering leaves the top layer drier for longer between waterings, which makes it less attractive to them.
Can I bottom water with fertilizer in the water?
Yes, and it’s one of the best reasons to do it. Just use a gentle, natural fertilizer at a moderate dilution—a full soak means the whole root ball is in contact with the solution, so you don’t need it strong.
My plant has drooped even though the soil is wet. What now?
Take it out of the pot and look at the roots—plants genuinely don’t mind being seen naked. White and firm means the roots are fine and you’re likely dealing with a dry pocket or shock. Brown, mushy and smelly means rot, and you need to cut the damage away and repot into a better-draining mix.
Bringing It Back To Your Shelf
If you take one thing from this: soil needs to be fully saturated every single time you water.
Sear that into your brain. It’s the sentence I repeat more than any other, because it quietly fixes a dozen problems people spend money trying to solve some other way.
Water thoroughly. Then wait until the plant actually needs it again. Check with your finger and the weight of the pot rather than the calendar. Add a wetting agent so the water goes where it’s meant to. And if you’re scared to soak a pot, look hard at your soil mix, because that’s the real conversation.
Do that and you’ll water less, spend less, and grow noticeably better plants.
It’s a bit of a chore hauling everything to the sink. Your plants will make it worth it.
Terms & Abbreviations (Quick Reference)
- Bottom watering – Setting a pot in water and letting the soil draw moisture up through the drainage holes. Also called butt chugging, soaking, or basin watering.
- Capillary action – The physical process that pulls water upward through the tiny spaces between soil particles, against gravity.
- Hydrophobic soil – Soil that has dried out so completely it repels water instead of absorbing it. Common with peat and coco coir.
- Saturation – The point at which all the soil in a pot has absorbed as much water as it can hold. Signalled by a damp surface when bottom watering.
- Surfactant / wetting agent – A compound that lowers water’s surface tension so it spreads into soil rather than beading off. Yucca saponins are a natural example.
- Saponins – Naturally occurring soap-like compounds found in yucca and many other plants.
- Root rot – Root death caused by oxygen deprivation in waterlogged soil, usually followed by opportunistic pathogens. A drainage and aeration problem, not strictly a water-quantity problem.
- Aeration – The air-filled pore space in a soil mix. Created with perlite, pumice, bark, and similar materials.
