How To Get Rid Of Fungus Gnats On Houseplants (For Good)

Those little black flies drifting up out of your pots when you water? Fungus gnats.

They’re the most common houseplant pest there is, and also the most misunderstood. People swat at the adults for weeks, buy spray after spray, and wonder why they never go away.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you: the flies you’re annoyed by aren’t the problem. They’re the symptom. The actual damage is happening underground, and the actual cause is almost always something you’re doing with your watering can.

Fix that, and they vanish. Let me walk you through it.

What Fungus Gnats Actually Are

Fungus gnats are small dark flies, 2–4 mm long, that you’ll see walking across the soil surface or flying in lazy, weak little loops around your plants. They’re often mistaken for fruit flies, but fruit flies hang around your kitchen bin and fungus gnats hang around your pots.

Here’s the life cycle, because understanding it is the entire solution:

  1. Eggs – laid in the top layer of damp soil, hundreds at a time
  2. Larvae – tiny translucent maggots with black heads, living in the top 2–3 cm of soil. This is the damaging stage.
  3. Pupae – in the soil
  4. Adults – the flies you see. They live about a week, don’t really feed, and spend that week laying the next generation

The whole cycle takes around 3 to 4 weeks, and faster in warm rooms. That speed is why they seem to explode out of nowhere.

Why the adults barely matter

Adult fungus gnats don’t bite, don’t damage leaves, and barely fly. They’re annoying and that’s about it.

The larvae are the real issue. They feed on fungus, decaying organic matter, and—when the population gets big enough—on your plant’s fine feeder roots and root hairs. On a mature plant that’s a minor drag on growth. On seedlings and cuttings, which live or die by their delicate young roots, a heavy larval population can genuinely kill them.

So when you spend two weeks swatting adults, you’re ignoring the part that actually matters and the part that keeps regenerating the flies.


The Root Cause: Wet Topsoil

This is the whole thing, so I want to be clear about it.

Fungus gnat larvae need consistently moist soil and the fungus that grows in it to survive. A soil surface that stays damp week after week is a perfect nursery. A surface that dries out between waterings is a desert they can’t breed in.

Almost every fungus gnat infestation traces back to one of these:

  • Overwatering – the surface never gets a chance to dry
  • Watering little and often – keeps the top damp constantly (the exact opposite of what you want)
  • Dense, water-retentive soil – holds moisture at the surface for too long
  • No airflow – slows surface drying

Notice that these are watering and soil problems. That’s why fungus gnats are so often a sign that your watering routine needs a rethink—they’re nature’s overwatering alarm.

Same thing happens outdoors

In the garden, fungus gnats show up in seed trays, greenhouses, and anywhere soil stays wet with poor airflow—propagation setups especially. The fix is identical: improve drainage, ease off the watering, increase airflow. A pot on a windowsill and a tray in a greenhouse are the same battle.


The Fungus Gnat Protocol

Here’s how I’d clear them, in order of importance.

Step 1: Let the surface dry out

This is 80% of the fix. Stop watering on a schedule and start letting the top 2–3 cm of soil dry completely before you water again.

The larvae live in that top layer. Dry it out repeatedly and you break their life cycle without spraying anything. For most houseplants this is entirely healthy—they prefer a dry-down between waterings anyway.

Step 2: Switch to bottom watering

Bottom watering is a fungus gnat’s worst enemy. You set the pot in water, the soil draws moisture up from below, and the top layer stays relatively dry—which is exactly where the gnats want to lay eggs.

You get a fully hydrated root zone and a dry surface at the same time. It’s the single best structural change you can make against them.

Step 3: Diatomaceous earth on the surface

Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a fine powder of fossilized diatoms—microscopically sharp. Larvae moving through it and adults emerging from the soil get their soft bodies damaged and dry out.

Dust a thin layer across the soil surface of every affected pot. Because it works dry, reapply after watering or whenever it gets damp. Step 4: Yellow sticky traps

Yellow sticky traps catch adults—fungus gnats are strongly drawn to yellow. Lay them flat on the soil surface or stand them just above it.

They won’t clear an infestation alone, but they do two useful things: they remove egg-laying females from circulation, and they act as your scoreboard. Fewer gnats stuck to the trap each week means you’re winning. More means you’re not drying out enough.

Step 5: A soil drench for heavy cases

If the population is large, treat the larvae directly. A drench of Herbal Plant Soap and water poured through the soil helps break down soft-bodied larvae in the root zone. Combine it with Yucca Extract so it penetrates evenly rather than channelling straight through.

The traditional home remedy here is a hydrogen peroxide drench (one part 3% peroxide to four parts water), which kills larvae on contact and fizzes as it does. It works, but it also knocks back your soil microbes, so I treat it as a last resort rather than a first move.

One more thing worth checking: if your pots are staying wet enough to breed gnats, you may be drifting toward a bigger problem. Persistently soggy soil is also how root rot starts, so treat a gnat outbreak as an early warning about your watering, not just a bug to swat.


Protect Your Soil Life While You Do This

Here’s a tension worth naming. Some gnat treatments—peroxide especially, and repeated drenching—kill beneficial soil microbes right alongside the larvae.

Those microbes are the organisms that actually deliver nutrients to your plant’s roots, so wiping them out to kill a nuisance fly is a poor trade if you can avoid it.

This is why I lead with the dry-out and bottom-watering approach—it starves the gnats without harming anything living in the soil. If you do use an aggressive drench, follow up afterwards with a dose of Plant Probiotic or a scoop of dry fertilizer to rebuild the microbial community.


Where They Came From

Usually one of three places.

Bagged potting soil. This is the big one. Fungus gnat eggs and larvae frequently come in a fresh bag of mix—including from major brands. You bring the bag home, repot, and two weeks later you’ve got flies. If you want to be safe with new or suspect soil, pouring boiling water over it kills everything (then reintroduce microbes, since it’s indiscriminate). We cover this in our soil mix guide.

A new plant. Every plant you bring home is a potential carrier. Isolate new arrivals for a couple of weeks and watch for flies before they join the shelf.

Open windows and doors. Adults drift in from outside, find a damp pot, and move in. You can’t prevent this entirely—but a collection that’s watered properly gives them nowhere to breed.


Mistakes That Keep Fungus Gnats Alive

1. Only killing the adults

Sprays and traps aimed at flies do nothing to the larvae breeding in your soil. Kill every adult today and a new batch hatches this week. You have to target the soil.

2. Not changing your watering

You can drench and dust all you like, but if the topsoil stays permanently wet, you’re running a gnat farm and treating it at the same time. The moisture is the cause.

3. Treating one pot

Adults fly—weakly, but they fly. If you’ve got gnats in one pot, the females are visiting your other damp pots too. Treat the whole collection.

4. Giving up after a week

The life cycle runs 3–4 weeks. You need to stay consistent long enough to break it—expect a good two to four weeks of dry-downs and traps before they’re truly gone.

5. Reaching for peroxide first

It works, but it’s hard on your soil biology. Try starving them out before you sterilize your root zone.

How do I get rid of fungus gnats fast?

The fastest reliable route is to let the top 2–3 cm of soil dry out completely, switch to bottom watering, dust the surface with diatomaceous earth, and add yellow sticky traps for the adults. For a heavy population, add a soil drench. Expect it to take 2 to 4 weeks to fully break the cycle.

Do fungus gnats damage plants?

The adults don’t. The larvae feed on fine roots and can meaningfully harm seedlings, cuttings, and small plants with delicate root systems. On established plants the damage is usually minor, but a large population will slow growth.

Does cinnamon get rid of fungus gnats?

Cinnamon has mild antifungal properties, and since larvae feed partly on soil fungus, a dusting can slightly reduce their food source. It’s a minor helper at best—drying the soil out does far more.


Bringing It Back To Your Shelf

Fungus gnats feel like a pest problem. They’re really a watering problem with wings.

Once you see the damp surface as the thing you’re actually fighting—not the flies—the whole situation gets simple. Dry out the top of the soil. Bottom water. Dust with DE. Trap the adults. Give it the full cycle.

And the lasting fix is the same thing that fixes half of all houseplant problems: water thoroughly, then let the soil dry before you water again, in a mix that drains properly. Do that and gnats never really get a foothold in the first place.

The flies are annoying. They’re also telling you something useful. Worth listening.
